Canal House Ferry Dyke
I was the last child to be born at Canal House Ferry Dyke in Old Kilpatrick. My Father William Graham was employed as the diver for the canal and the house came along with the position. My mother used to go out and lift the little bridge to let the fishing boats traverse through on their journey.
As far as I am aware I was the last reported birth on the canal at Ferry Dyke in 1963 - the year the canal was closed. Many fond memories come back when I think about the house and indeed whenever I was home on leave from the forces I would travel down just to stand on the bridge and look at the house. Although I was very young when I left the house I have never forgotten how happy all my family was there. At the front, a busy working canal at the back a big adventure playground for three children with very big imaginations. We did everything from making a circus in the old stables to my older brother and sister playing RAWHIDE (the TV cowboy series) and attempting to drive some local cattle across the canal.
I was lucky that before someone burned the place down I was able to take my two sons and wife to see where I was born. The day I discovered the house had burned down, it was though I had lost an old friend.
